영국의 근대작곡가로 꼽히는 R. 본 윌리엄스(1872~1958)의
대표적 소품 '푸른 옷소매'는 16세기말 영국의 노랫가락(민요)으로,
푸른 옷소매를 입은 바람끼 있는 여자를 노래한
것이라고 한다. 본 윌리엄스는 이 옛 노랫가락으로
환상곡(幻想曲)을 만들었고 '푸른 옷소매 주제에 의한 환상곡'으로 이름 붙였다.

본래 이 곡은 1928년에 쓴 '사랑에 빠진 존경'이란 4막짜리
오페라의 간주곡으로 쓰였는데 1934년 독립시켜 환상곡으로 고쳐 썼다.
민요조의 서정적인 선율이 너무도 아름답고 인상적인 이 곡은
민요를 바탕으로 한 성공적인 편곡의 전형 중 하나다.

플륫과 하프가 짧은 선율을 노래하고 나면, 낮은 현악기가
가만가만히 아이를 잠재우는 듯 느릿한 리듬의 노래를 시작한다.
노래는 높은 현악기와 낮은 현악기를 오가며,
싸늘한 가을바람이 옷깃에 스며들 듯 듣는이의 마음 속으로 스며든다.(옮긴 글)

1872년 영국에서 태어난 본 윌리엄스는 영국의 대표적인 국민주의 작곡가로
20세기에 영국 음악의 르네상스를 추진한 주요 인물이다.
그는 외국의 작품을 모방해서는 아무 것도 얻을 수 없다는
사실을 깨닫고 자국의 민요와 16, 17세기 엘리자베스 왕조와
제임즈 1세 시대의 음악을 접합시킴으로써 자신의 개성을 살려 나갔다.

1907년 12월부터 1908년 2월까지 본 윌리엄즈는 파리에서 체류하면서
라벨 밑에서 특히 관현악법에 대하여 공부했다.
그의 음악 공부의 종말을 고하는 작품은 휘트먼의 시에 의한
소프라노, 바리톤, 합창, 오케스트라를 위한 '바다의 교향곡
A Sea Symphony'(1903-10)이다. 이 작품은 9곡에 이르는
교향곡의 첫곡으로 1910년에 초연되었다. 그 해에
'토머스 탈리스의 주제에 의한 판타지 Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis'로
작곡가로서의 명성을 얻었다.

본 윌리엄스는 마이클 티펫과 피터 맥스웰 데이비스 이전의
영국이 낳은 금 세기 최고의 작곡가로 평가받고 있다.
