Janine Jansen (1978)

Janine Jansen (Utrecht, 1978) is a Dutch solo violinist. She took up the violin at the age of 6. She appeared as the soloist with the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland in 2001, where she performed the Brahms Violin Concerto in D major, opus 77. She opened the BBC Proms in 2005. Janine studied with Coosje Wijzenbeek, Philipp Hirshhorn, and Boris Belkin. She is very adventurous with her perfor- mance, with emphasis on communication more than on precision or adherance to status quo. Her tone is of extremely fine quality. Her recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons is a good example of her style. She eschews tradition in two ways: recording with only 5 solo strings rather than an orchestra, including her Brother on the Cello and Father on the Continuo. Her performance of Tchaikovsky Concerto on with Cleveland Symphony Orchestra and Vladimir Askenazy conducting may be one of the greatest performances in her generation. As of January 2006, there are two mainstream CDs (one also a hybrid SACD) available of her playing. The first is a collection of Encore pieces, conducted by Barry Words- worth, the Second a Chamber Ensemble rendition of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. The Violist in this recording is none other than Julian Rachlin, who frequently performs with Ms. Jansen in Chamber music Concerts around Europe.

    • Review : Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, BBC Proms - BBC Symphony Orchestra, Conductor/Roger Norrington 16th July 2005. Earlier there had been nothing but lightness, delicacy and enchanting grace from the Dutch violinist Janine Jansen. When she reduced the slow movement of Mendelssohn's Concerto to the merest wisp of a pianissimo, 5,000 people scarcely dared to breathe. It was an astonishingly audacious thing for a young soloist playing live in front of millions to do (this part of the concert was also broadcast live on BBC1). But with Jansen you never feel any effect is contrived. Her interpretations seem to flow as naturally from the heart of the music as water from a spring. The Times
