재즈 스탠다드로서 "Body and Soul" 못지 않게 top의 자리를 차지 하고 있는 'Round Midnight은 가장 많은 재즈인들이 레코딩한 곡이다. 천재적인 음악인으로 재즈계에 근 40년에 걸쳐 획기적인 영향을 준 작곡가이며 피아노 플레이어인 Thelonious Monk
(1917-1982)가 18세 때에 작곡한 곡이다. 1944년 Cootie Williams가 그의 밴드와 함께 처음 레코딩하여 각광을 받기 시작해서 Cootie Williams가 합작한 곡으로도 알려져 있다. 1946년에 Dizzy Gillespie가 빅밴드의 연주를 위하여 인트로덕션과 카덴자를 붙여서 그 후 많은 재즈인들이 이부분을 연주에 부가하기도 한다. Bernie Hanighan이 1949년에 떠나가 버린 사랑, 못잊는 사랑을 엮은 가사를 붙여서 이곡은 보컬로도 많이 연주된다. Thelonious Monk는 이곡을 여러번 레코딩 하였는데 그의 피아노 솔로가 이곡을 가장 심오하게 해석한다고 할 수 있다.

이곡이 특히 인기를 얻게한 재즈인은 Miles Davis이다. 그가 1955년 뉴포트 재즈페스티벌에서 연주하고 그후 1956년에 레코딩을 내놓은것을 계기로 이곡은 대중이 많이 알게되었고 특히 큰 사랑을 받기 시작하였다. 마일스 데이비스의 마음을 파고드는 이곡의 해석은 그누구도 따를 수 없다. 1986년에 같은 제목의 영화가 개봉되어 각광을 받았는데 Dexter Gordon이 빠리로 이주한 많은 엑스퍼트 재즈인 중의 하나인 나이들어가는 테너 색서폰플레이어로 주연을 맡았다. 그는 아카데미상 후보에 까지 올랐었고 이영화의 음악을 책임진 Herbie Hancock는 아카데미의 Best Score상을 받았다.
