미국 흑인들이 노예 시대에 만들어 부른 민요인 흑인영가는 음악적으로는 
아프리카와 앵글로 아메리카 요소가 융합되어 있으며 5음 음계를 바탕으로 한 
단순한 음계, 당김음 위주의 리금, 약동하는 비트감각 등을 특징으로 한다.
