1966년에 발표된 영화 "Alfie"는 1960년대 성도덕에서 해방된 젊은남자들의 자기 중심적인, 쾌락만 쫓는 무절제한 삶을 영화의 프로타고니스트인 Alfie를 통해서 고발한다. Alfie는 쾌락중심적인 삶의 연속 속에서 결국은 좌절을 경험하고 서서히 자신의 모습을 보게된다는 영화로 그당시 젊은이들에게 크게 어필했다. 1960년대의 시각에서 보는 것이 중요한 영화라 할까!
이 영화로 영국의 배우 Michael Caine이 널리 알려지고 사랑을 받기 시작했다. 이 영화는 Billy Naughton원작의 소설을 영화화한 것으로 Lewis Gilbert가 감독이다. 주제가인 "What's It All About, Alfie?"는 Hal David작사, Burt Bacharach작곡으로 아카데미 음악상 후보에 들었었고, 그 당시 Cilla Black이 레코딩한 앨범은 #10 chart에 올랐었다. 영국에서 개봉된 것에는 Millicent Martin이 부른 것을 삽입했고, 미국에서 개봉된 것에는 Cher가 부른 것을 삽입했다. 이 영화의 soundtrack은 재즈 색서폰의 대가인 Sonny Rollins가 그의 13인 재즈단과 함께 책임을 맡았다.

젊은 시절 웬만한 영화는 거의 다 보았고, 그 음악도 음반을 통해서 거의 다 들어보거나 알고있다고 자부하곤 했는데
이 영화 Alfie는 기억의 타래 속에 그림자조차 안보입니다. 혹시 국내에선 개봉되지 않은 건지?
