올해 85세인 벨라폰테는 미국인이지만 고향은 자메이카이다. 그가 1959년 카네기홀에서 부른 '대니 보이'는 거의 무반주처럼 들린다. 흑인 특유의 깊은 低音이 듣는 이들의 영혼을 울린다. 벨라폰테는 가수, 배우, 人權운동가, 자선사업가로 살았다. 유명한 흑인 배우 시드니 포이티어와는 청년기부터 친구였다. 가난하던 시절 두 사람은 연극표를 한 장 구해서 교대로 구경하였다고 한다. '대니 보이'는 절대로 결혼식 때 부르는 곡이 아니다.
가사는 영국인이 썼지만 曲은 아일랜드 민요(Londonderry Air)로서 장례식 때 불린다.

11th of may he will never be forgoten love you so much 13 years on and we still
miss you..

well, you raise me up could be consider a rip off of this traditional song popular in
ireland for a long time...the tune is actually "londonderry air", and has been around since the 1800s...the words to danny boy were written in the early 1900s and set
to the tune, and popularised by irish expats...the tune is used as one of northern
ireland's anthems...i say one of because their offical anthem is god save the queen...
but at the commonwealth games they use londonderry air.
