5월에 듣는 재즈:

"Skylark (종달새)"와
"Joy Spring (기쁨의 봄)"

5월이면 종달새의 지저귐과 함께 Hoegy Carmichael이 작곡하고 johnny Mercer가 작사한 "Skylark"을 들으며 늦은 봄의 아쉬움과 그리움을 가슴 뭉클하게 느낄 수 있다. 재즈 스탠다드곡 중의 하나인 이 곡은 많은 재즈인이 악기 중심으로, 또는 노래로 레코딩 하였다.

"Joy Spring"은 25세의 젊은 나이에 교통사고로 세상을 뜬 Clifford Brown이 작곡 당시 그의 애인이었고 아내가 된 LaRue Anderson을 위해 작곡한 곡으로 여기 올린 동영상의 1954년 레코딩이 있고 그 후 Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet도 레코딩 하였으며 트럼펫연주의 스탠다드곡 이기도 하다. 여름을 기다리는 마음으로 들떠있는 기분을 전해 준다고 할 수도 있지만 아마 열애 중이던 그의 마음을 알려주기도 한다.

And in your lonely flight haven`t you heard the music in the night, wonderful music, faint as a will o` the wisp, crazy as a loon, sad as a gypsy serenading the moon.

Oh, skylark, I don`t know if you can find these things but my heart is riding on your wings. So if you see them anywhere won`t you lead me there?
