엘리자베드 여왕 시대부터 애창되고 있었다고 한다. 문호 
윌리엄 셰익스피어(William Shakespeare)도 희극 윈저
의 명랑한 아낙네들 속에 이 노래를 사용하였고, 영국의 
현대음악 작곡가 랄프 본 윌리엄스는 이 멜로디를 사용하여 
그린슬리브스에 의한 환상곡을 작곡한 바 있다. 
 
원곡은 느린 팝박자의 매우 우아한 곡상을 지니고 있으며,
푸른 옷소매의 연인을 그리워한다는 가사 외에도 가사를
바꾼 여러 가지의 노래가 있다..
