William Morris (1834-1896) English artist, poet and designer.
One of the PRE-RAPHAELITES, he sought to counteract the effects of industrialization
by a return to the aesthetic standards and craftmanship of the Middle Ages.
In 1861 he set up Morris and Co. to design and make wallpaer, furniture, carpets
and other home furnishings. His founding (1890) of the Kelmscott Press
had a primary impact of typographical and book design.

참고로 Eiffel Tower는 프랑스 혁명 100주년(1889) 기념으로 세워졌고
Statue of Liberty는 미국 독립 100주년(1876) 기념으로 프랑스에서 기증하였다.

그 중에서 특히 HUCKLEBERRY FINN 이야기는 미시시피강을 따라 내려가는 뗏목 여행을 소재로 한 이야기로서
현실감이 잘 조화된 그의 특유의 유머 감각의 산물이다. 그의 말년은 그리 순탄치 못했다. 증권 투자에 실패하여
재산을 거의 모두 날리고, 부인과 따님의 죽음을 겪어야 했다. 그의 작품 또한 점점 비관적으로 그리고 신랄하게
풍자적으로 흘러가게 되는데, The Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson, The Man Who Corrupted Hadleyburg 등이
그의 후기 작품이다.
