4월의 詩: 골웨이 키넬의 《둘은 여행을 떠나다》

Two Set Out on their Journey

We sit side by side,
brother and sister, and read
the book of what will be, while the wind
blows the pages over—
desolate odd, desolate even,
and otherwise. When it falls open
to our own story, the happy beginning,
the ending happy or not we don’t know,
the ten thousand acts which encumber
and engross all the days between,
we will read every page of it,
for if the ancestors have pressed
a love-flower for us, it will lie
between pages of the slow going,
where only those who adore the story
can find it. When the time comes
to close the book and set out,
whether possessing that flower
or just the dream of it, we will walk
hand in hand a little while,
taking the laughter of childhood
as far as we can into the days to come,
until we can hear, in the distance,
another laughter sounding back
from the earth where our next bodies
will have risen already
and where they will be laughing,
gently, at all that seemed deadly serious once,
offering to us new wayfarers
the light heart
we started with, but made of time and sorrow.

둘은 여행을 떠나다

우리는 나란히 앉아서,
남매, 미래를 적은
책을 읽는다, 바람이  
책장을 넘겨주는데--
황량한 홀수의 章, 황량한 짝수의 章,
그리고 등 등. 우리 이야기가 쓰인 章이  
펼쳐 지면, 그 행복한 시작,
행복할지 아닐지 우리는 알 수 없는 마지막,
시작과 마지막 사이의 모든 날을 
지워버리고 채워준 수십 천 개의 일들,
우리는 모든 페이지를 읽을 것이다,
행여나 우리의 조상이 우리를 위하여 
사랑의 꽃을 책장 속에 넣었을까 보아,
그것은 천천히 넘기는 책갈피 속에 끼어 있을 테니까,
이 이야기를 흠모하는 사람 만이 
찾을 수 있을 테니까. 책을 덮고 
떠날 시간이 오면,
그 꽃을 찾아 가졌던지 
아니면 그것의 꿈만 가졌던지, 우리는 
손에 손을 잡고 잠시간은 걸어갈 것이다,
우리 어린 시절의 웃음을 품고 
다가오는 날들 속으로 우리가 갈 수 있을 만큼,
저 먼 곳에서, 우리 재생의 육체가 
이미 일어나 버린 지구로부터
그리고 그 새로운 존재들은,  
조용히, 예전에는 죽도록 심각했었던 
모든 것들에 대해 웃어버리는 곳으로부터, 
새로 길떠난 우리에게 시작했었을 때의 가벼운 마음을
하지만 시간과 슬픔으로 가득한 마음을 전해 주는 
또 하나의 웃음소리를 
들을 수 있을 때까지.
